Philosophy
good
girl
relies on a few key concepts to make her go. All aspects remain, for ever
and always, up for discussion, debate, refinement and evolution. So by
all means, bring it.
Subjectivity
The nature of perception is wondrously limited and subjective. On a universal
scale, there’s great humility in accepting just how little we yet
know about the grand mysteries of the world. On a personal scale we can
embrace our perception for what it is – that is, always and only
partial, biased and subjective – and deepen our capacity for learning
and listening for our trouble. Just for fun, good
girl
also loves to question a mainstream media that insists on the illusion
that “unbiased” and “objective” explorations of
the world are desirable or even possible (the facts, ma’am, just
the facts). This ma’am thinks that approach is hooey, and is much
more interested in creating culture that confronts and addresses
both personal and cultural subjectivities head-on. In other words, we
don’t know much, and that’s so much more interesting
than insisting we know it all.
Play
The world is a hard enough place to be without taking it too seriously.
Play, humour and irony keep my head tied on straight (or something related
to straight).
Hope
(or something related to hope)
Despair creeps into all kinds of places it’s not welcome or useful,
and the mainstream media tends to be a particularly far-reaching and hope-free
lens through which to see the world. The kind of media that can change
the world (as opposed to simply report on it) is the kind good
girl wants
to be part of: the kind that actually inspires people to take action and
be accountable for the world we live in.
Responsibility
Let's face it friends, we're all connected: on a subatomic level there's
nothing to distinguish you from the very chair you're sitting on. How
we treat each other and the planet matters. No, really.
Practice
Things don’t happen without action. Whether this action is one or
a combination of drawing, voting, singing, meditating, letter-sending,
dancing, praying, writing, or any other active verb, you have to take
action to learn, to make art, to make change, to evolve. Action has to
happen, and repeatedly, for change to occur. That’s why they call
it practice. Don’t just think about it. Do it. And keep doing it.
Creativity
Like
play and humour, art is one of the beautiful things in the world that
makes things not only bearable, but often downright delightful. Beyond
that, creative thought is what inspires and drives human evolution (and
how obvious is it that humans need to keep evolving?)! The purpose of
goodgirl.ca is to explore the above using
all possible means of creative making, doing and thinking.
